A tornado came through Fargo, ND in 1957. It destroyed much property, and it killed 12 people. 6 of those 12 were the 6 children of Mercedes Erickson....ages 16 months to 16 years.
She was slated to leave work that day, but lingered until her replacement arrived. She'd heard that the tornado was hitting North Fargo. She called home. She heard her oldest daughter scream, "It's here!" and "I didn't get to say another word to her."
I can't imagine having to deal with something like that. I simply can not imagine.
In 2007, Fargo held a 50th anniversary of that June 20th day. Mercedes was a 'guest of honor'. They presented her with 6 red roses.
She said, “It’s something you don’t forget.”
Friday, September 4, 2009, at age 88, Mercedes died. I wish her a beautiful family reunion. I wish a heavenly symphony. I wish her well. And, i wish her love.
As I'd read her story today, I simply could not imagine walking in her shoes. I just can't wrap my mind around that much pain.
